Peter Brotherhood

Peter Brotherhood (born April 1838 in Maidenhead, near Chippenham , † October 13, 1902 ) was a British engineer .

He trained as an engineer in the railway sector and, at the age of 21, joined his father's Rowland Brotherhood, a supplier company for railway technology. He had two sons who continued his work: Arthur and Stanley.

In 1872, Brotherhood invented a particularly high-speed version of a three-cylinder steam engine , which was later called the Brotherhood machine. The axes of the three cylinders are inclined to each other by 120 °. Three connecting rods engage a common crank and are directly connected to the cylinder's piston pins. As a result of this arrangement, the machine has no dead center and works smoothly. It was possible to achieve speeds of 600 / min and even 1000 / min for a short time. Finnish patent no. FI132 was granted on October 10, 1874, a Russian patent for this invention was granted in 1875 for a period of 10 years. Several other patents followed.

The Brotherhood machine was able to drive electric dynamo machines directly without transmission, which was advantageous in terms of size and efficiency. A short time later, the military became aware of this and so the Brotherhood machine was used as early as 1875 on British warships to generate electricity. The Brotherhood machine was also used to propel (submarine) torpedoes . The G7a torpedo type of the German Reichsmarine had such a drive.

Peter Brotherhood Ltd. was founded in 1867 . founded in London; In 1906 the company moved to Peterborough . The product range included steam and gas turbines as well as compressors. The company existed independently until 2007, with sales of 50.5 million British pounds. On July 1, 2008, it was by the American company Dresser-Rand Group Inc acquired.
