Peter Cartwright

Peter Cartwright (* 1. September 1785 in Amherst County , Virginia; †  25. September 1872 in Pleasant Plains, Sangamon County, Illinois) was an early American " Hellfire-and-brimstone " - preacher and missionary , of the Second Great Awakening to Start helped and personally baptized twelve thousand people .

At the age of 16 he had a revival experience. He turned to the Methodist Episcopal Church and became a preacher and district horseman there . In 1812 he was a participant in the British-American War . In the same year he was appointed Presiding Elder (now District Superintendent) in 1812 , a position he held for fifty years. In 1846 he was defeated as a candidate for a seat for the state of Illinois in the US Congress to Abraham Lincoln . He was married to Frances Gaines since 1808 , with whom he had two sons and seven daughters. Death is said to have overtaken him on horseback. He was buried in his hometown of Pleasant Plains , Illinois.
