Political career

In 1992 Grant was elected to the Fife Regional Council for the SNP. In the 2000s he was chairman of the SNP- liberal-democratic government coalition in Fife.

With the death of Labor MP John MacDougall in August 2008, by-elections were required in his constituency of Glenrothes . The SNP Grant ran for these candidates. On election day he was able to improve the result of the SNP compared to the previous election, but was clearly defeated by the Labor candidate Lindsay Roy .

Once again Grant ran for the British general election in 2015 in the constituency of Glenrothes. With the massive gains in votes by the SNP in these elections, Grant finally won the mandate and subsequently moved into the British House of Commons for the first time . There he is a member of the European Scrutiny Committee and the joint Consolidation Bills Committee . Despite losing votes, Grant defended his mandate in the early 2017 general election .
