Party career

Hinze joined the SPD in 1999; According to him, he feels "connected to this party from an early age". In 2003 Hinze became chairman of the Emmerich city association of this party, for which he moved into the city council in 2004 and became deputy mayor. He held this office until 2012, when he took over the chairmanship of his group in the city council.

Mayor's office

In 2004 and 2009, Hinze was his party's candidate for mayor, but both times clearly inferior to the incumbent Johannes Diks (CDU). In the third attempt, Hinze was elected to succeed Johannes Diks in September 2015 with the support of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen and voters of the BGE. In the runoff election , the challenger was 67.22% to 32.78% well ahead of the incumbent, who ultimately failed as CDU mayor on the Neumarkt project. For the first time in over 20 years, an SPD politician became mayor of Emmerich.

In the first year of his tenure, Hinze created and filled the position of a full-time "economic promoter" for the city of Emmerich, which he had already named as one of his priorities when he was sworn in. From October 2018 to July 2019 he temporarily held this office himself. Peter Hinze is standing for re-election in 2020.

Personal

Hinze became known beyond the region for his confessions to his homosexuality as well as to very personal difficulties up to suicidal thoughts as part of his coming-out . Hinze admitted his homosexuality in 2004 when he was still living with his then wife and a son. In September 2017, Hinze married his current husband. The fact that the Münster bishop Felix Genn forbade the church blessing after the pastor of the Catholic Church in Wesel - Bislich had already promised to do so caused a nationwide stir .
