Peter J. Wexler

Peter J. Wexler (* 1923 ; † 2002 ) was a British Romance studies and lexicologist .

life and work

Peter Jacob Wexler received his doctorate in 1951 from the Sorbonne on La formation du vocabulaire des chemins de fer en France, 1778-1842 (Geneva / Lille 1955). He taught first at the University of Manchester , then at the University of Essex . Wexler provided numerous materials for Bernard Quemadas Matériaux pour l'histoire du vocabulaire français. Datations et documents lexicographiques , Besançon 1959-1965. Above all, however, he made 50,000 citations available to the Oxford English Dictionary , including 500 first copies. He published in the Cahiers de lexicologie .
