Peter Klassen (born October 24, 1935 in Holthausen ; † December 25, 2008 in Guingamp ) was a German sculptor from Plettenberg - Holthausen .

Vita

After his school days in Holthausen, he met his mentor, master engraver Heinrich Höfer, who taught him the technical skills. His sculptural works in the early 1960s were awarded prizes, for example with the price of the CVJM Westbund in 1960 and in 1963 with the state price of the Kuratourium 'Indivisible Germany' in Münster. However, his works were created on a part-time basis until 1974; only in mid-1974 did he work exclusively as a freelance artist. At times he set up a second workshop in Tyrol. He held successful exhibitions in 1975 in the gallery at the cathedral in Innsbruck and in 1976 in the Volksbank Plettenberg.

He was married to the gallery owner Lieselotte Klassen. Peter Klassen was also the founder of the Plettenberg workshop for promoting culture.

In 2001 he retired from Plettenberg to his new adopted home in Brittany, where he spent the last eight years of his life.

Works

He created a number of important works for his hometown. The four valleys fountain at the east gate is just as much a part of it as the Engelbert sculpture on Graf-Engelbert-Platz and the wooden sculpture Waiting for the rainbow . His last work for his hometown was the crystal cross in the Christ Church. Works in the Märkisches Kreis that are well known are the Pott Jost and the Zöger sculpture in Altena and the group of pigs in Werdohl . In the rest of Germany there are works by Klassen in Starnberg, Norderney and in Steinen an der Straße. In addition to sculptures, he also made woodcuts.
