Helmut Karl Peter Kupfer (* 1946 in Munich ) is a German sinologist and university professor .

Life

Peter Kupfer studied Sinology from 1970 to 1979 with a focus on modern Chinese at the University of Bonn . In 1979 he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD. As minor subjects, he took linguistics, Indonesian-Malay and Japanese and obtained the diplomas for Indonesian and modern Chinese at the seminar for oriental languages ​​in 1972 and 1974.

From 1980 to 1998 Peter Kupfer worked as a lecturer at the Department of Applied Linguistics and Cultural Studies at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz . In 1990 he completed his habilitation at the University of Trier. In 1998 he accepted a university professorship in Chinese Studies / Chinese Language and Culture at the University of Mainz in Germersheim. Until 2012 he was head of the Chinese department and from 2001 to 2003 dean of the department of translation, linguistics and cultural studies.

From 1983 to 2008, Kupfer was the founder and 1st and 2nd chairman of the Professional Association Chinese eV (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) and editor of the magazine CHUN (CHINESISCHUNTERRICHT), 1990–2011 co-editor of the SinoLinguistica book series. From 2008 research trips along the Silk Road, research and publications on Chinese wine and alcohol culture.

Honors

  • 2000: Friendship Prize for Chinese Language and Culture of the People's Republic of China.
  • In 2012, Kupfer was awarded the Friedhelm Denninghaus Prize of the Chinese Association for special achievements and merits in promoting Chinese teaching in German-speaking countries.
