Peter Mauley
Peter Mauley (also Peter II Mauley ) (* around 1226, † 1279 ) was an English nobleman .
Peter II was the eldest son of Peter de Maulay and his wife Isabella of Thornham. His father, a former favorite of King John Ohneland originally from Poitou , had risen to become an important baron in Yorkshire through his marriage to the heiress of Robert of Thornham . After his father died in 1241 during the barons' crusade , Peter II inherited his goods. In contrast to his father, however, he did not succeed in gaining the king's favor, but remained a nobleman primarily limited to Yorkshire. In 1253 he accompanied King Heinrich III. during his expedition to Gascony , however, to the displeasure of the king, returned prematurely to England in 1254. Towards the end of the Barons' War in 1268, like many other barons, he was heavily in debt and is said to have owed Jewish moneylenders 2,000 marks .
He was married twice and his heir became his eldest son, Peter III Mauley . A younger son of his, Edmund Mauley , served as Steward of the Household under Edward II and died in 1314 at the Battle of Bannockburn .
