Father René Paulin Jacobé de Naurois (born November 26, 1906 in Paris in the 9th arrondissement , † January 12, 2006 in Brunoy ) was a French Catholic clergyman and ornithologist .

Live and act

His parents made sure that he studied at the University of Toulouse before he became a priest . Here he graduated in mathematics and physics , then in theology and finally in German philosophy . Because of the latter, he moved to Berlin in the pre-war period. Naurois was ordained a priest in 1936 and worked as a chaplain in the French parish of Berlin from 1937 to 1939 . Here he experienced the power of National Socialism . He communicated regularly with Archbishop Jules Saliège (1870–1956) about his experiences . He was mobilized in 1939 and released from military service in 1940 . In the same year he joined the resistance of the Vérité movement in the unoccupied zone in Pau , Grenoble and Toulouse , from which the Combat group emerged . Persecuted by the Germans, he fled to England in March 1943 . As a chaplain of the 1st Marine Infantry Battalion ( 1er bataillon de fusiliers marins commandos ) he landed on June 6, 1944 together with 170 other French soldiers in Ouistreham . He was awarded the Military Cross by Corporal Robert William Palliser Dawson , with whom he had a lifelong friendship . He also received the Croix de guerre 1939–1945 . After the war, Father Naurois returned to the diocese of Toulouse to teach there. He was awarded the title Compagnon de la Liberation by decree of November 17, 1945 . In 1989 he was awarded the honorary title Righteous Among the Nations at Yad Vashem . The President of the French Committee for Yad Vashem Richard Prasquier said of the award:

“Naurois has always and everywhere in its long life followed the path of justice and justice. As a man of faith, reflection and action, the Abbot de Naurois has always followed the path of good and honor. "

Naurois, the ornithologist

As the eldest son of five children, he spent his childhood on his father's large estate near Toulouse. Here his love for nature developed. He gave himself the name Dunnock . His ornithological career only began in 1954, when he published two articles on birds of prey near Toulouse and Morocco. In 1959, with the support of Noël Mayaud (1899–1989) and Henri Heim de Balsac (1899–1979), he began a study of bird colonies on the coastal areas in northwestern Africa, an area that stretched from southern Morocco to Mauritania . He was the first to describe in detail the avifauna of the Banc d'Arguin National Park , an area that is home to tens of thousands of pelicans , cormorants , herons , flamingos , ibises and spoonbills, as well as many species of gulls . Consequently, he discovered and described the importance of this coastal region. This mud flats is still an important habitat for countless migratory and winter birds from Eurasia . He was the first to prove the presence of the King Tern in the Old World . From 1960 to 1971 he was an employee of the Center national de la recherche scientifique . Here he wrote his doctoral thesis in 1969, entitled Peuplements et cycles de reproduction des oiseaux de la côte occidentale d'Afrique (du Cap Barbas, Sahara espagnol, à la frontière de la République de Guinée) . In this study, he meticulously described the biology and ecology of some of the important species that live in bird colonies. The dissertation gave insights into biogeographical questions at the interfaces between sea and land as well as between Afrotropic and Palearctic . Naurois was considered a tireless explorer of unknown ornithological regions and in particular Cape Verde . Cornelis Jan Hazevoet (* 1948) dedicated his book The Birds of the Cape Verde Islands to him , Paul Isenmann (* 1942) to him and Luc Hoffmann (1923–2016) his book The birds of the Banc d'Arguin, Mauritania . Since Naurois was particularly interested in islands, he also carried out research on New Caledonia and São Tomé and Príncipe . Like many ornithologists of his generation, he came to bird research by collecting bird eggs . He bequeathed his collection to the Muséum d'histoire naturelle de la Ville de Genève . Together with Jean Chaunu, he published his memoirs in 2004 with Aumônier de la France Libre .

Memberships and honors

René de Naurois was a Corresponding Fellow of the American Ornithologists' Union . He was an honorary member of the Ligue Internationale Contre le Racisme et l'Antisémitisme . In Toulouse, the Allée du Pere René de Naurois is named after him.
