The Madeira golden-cockerel ( Regulus madeirensis ) is a songbird found on Madeira Island . This bird was considered to be conspecific to the golden cockerel until 2003 . It differs from this by the shorter over-eye stripe, the dull orange hood and a longer beak.
features
The Madeira chickens reach a body length of 8 to 9 cm and a weight of 7 g. The male has a strong orange-yellow stripe on the crown of the head, along which broad black stripes run over the forehead. There is a pale orange spot on the lower front of the head.
Habitat and way of life
The Madeira gilded chickens live in laurel forests and oak - juniper mixed forests as well as in mountainous areas with blueberries and gorse bushes . Arthropods are taken as food , especially larger prey such as moths and butterflies . The cup-shaped nest made of moss, lichen and cobwebs, which is typical for golden cockerels, is built into the branches of large tree heather. The size of the clutch is not known.
