The Banc d'Arguin National Park ( Arabic حوض آركين, DMG Ḥauḍ Ārkīn  'Arguin Basin', French Parc National du Banc d'Arguin ) is located on the Atlantic coast of Mauritania between Nouakchott and Nouadhibou and was designated in 1976. The national park includes various landscape forms, such as sand dunes , coastal swamps, in addition to the island of Arguin, other smaller islands such as the Kiaone Islands and shallow coastal waters. The Arguin sandbank is part of the national park.

Wildlife

The Banc d'Arguin National Park since 1989 UNESCO - World Heritage because it is an important wintering ground of migratory birds and one of the richest bird areas worldwide. The park is one of the world's most important wintering areas for the whimbrel . At the end of the 20th century, 31,400 individuals of this species overwintered here. In addition, large numbers of colony breeders such as greater flamingos , spoonbills , pink pelicans , predatory , king and salmon terns and thin-billed gulls breed here .

Among the mammals, about 200 Dorcas gazelles are worth mentioning. In addition, there are African gold wolves , fennecs , sand foxes , sand cats , falcons , small-spotted gorse cats , white -naped weasels , honey badgers and striped hyenas . In Cap Blanc beyond living a small colony of the highly endangered Mediterranean monk seal . The sea is home to several species of turtles and dolphins .

Breeding areas are especially sandbanks and the islands of Tidra , Niroumi , Nair and Kijji . The waters are rich in fish, which both birds and several fishing villages in the area live on.

The other of the country's two national parks is Diawling National Park in the Senegal River Delta .
