The Diawling National Park is a national park in the extreme southwest of Mauritania in the administrative region of Trarza on the border with Senegal . It covers the delta of the Senegal River , in the rainy season it consists mainly of larger lakes.

The Diawling Park was founded in 1991 and has been a Ramsar area since 1994 . It is located in the district (Moughataa) Keur Massène. The wetland covers an area of ​​16,000 hectares, plus a peripheral zone of 30,000 hectares with sand dunes and a mangrove belt . The closest villages are Keur Massène in the north and Ndiago in the south. The park is surrounded by a total of 21 villages, the population of which for 2005 was given as 19,000.

The national park has been part of a cross-border biosphere reserve since 2005, together with the Senegalese world heritage Djoudj National Park . According to the January 2010 annual census, the park was home to 105 species - including 92 species of waterfowl - and 237,755 individuals of birds - up from 136,368 birds in 2009 when climatic and hydrological conditions were worse - including pelican , black stork and flamingo . There is also a wide variety of fish and significant populations of primates or warthogs .

Members of the Wolof and Fulbe live in the area of ​​the national park . The capital of the Trarza administrative region, Rosso , lies further upstream on Senegal. The only other national park in the country is the Banc d'Arguin National Park , another important habitat for migratory birds in Mauritania is the Lac d'Aleg .
