Catholic Church in Kārsava |
Kārsava ( Latgalian Kuorsova ; German Karsau , Russian and 1917 Korsowka ) is a city in the eastern part of Latvia near the Russian border.
history
The area was inhabited by the Latgale tribe from around the 8th century . Kārsava was a larger place with several fortified castle mounds. A local kraal resided here until 1763 . In that year the Catholic Church was also built.
In 1793, Polish Livonia fell to Russia and Kārsava became part of the Vitebsk Governorate . The place was on the post road from Rēzekne to Ostrow and became a center of trade. The place was badly devastated during Napoleon's Russian campaign . In 1836 a road from Saint Petersburg to Warsaw was built. A railway line followed in 1860 . This brought economic upswing for Kārsava, which is located on both routes.
After the First World War , the area was recognized as part of Latvia in 1920. In 1928 city rights were granted.
Buildings
The Roman Catholic Church (1763), the Russian Orthodox Church (19th century) and the Malnava Chapel (19th century) are of architectural interest.
