The blue noddy ( Procelsterna cerulea ) is a species in the subfamily of Noddiseeschwalben (Anoinae) (Sternidae) within the order of Regenpfeiferartigen (Charadriiformes).

Occurrences of blue noddis are found in American Samoa , the Cook Islands , Fiji , French Polynesia , Kiribati , the Marshall Islands , New Caledonia , the Samoa Islands , Tonga ( Niuas ), Tuvalu and Hawaii . An important breeding colony has been found on Jarvis Island , an outer area of the United States in the central Pacific , since the cats that were introduced in the 20th century were exterminated . Introduced predators are therefore also one of the greatest threats to the Blaunoddi populations. They were seen as stray visitors in Australia and Japan . Their natural habitat is the open, shallow sea in tropical and subtropical regions.

To the south of their range they are replaced by the Graunoddi ( Procelsterna albivitta ); the two used to be viewed as one species, today they tend to be treated as two different.
