Peter Nygård
Peter J. Nygård (born July 24, 1941 in Helsinki ) is a Finnish - Canadian entrepreneur in the fashion and textile industries .
Career
Nygård was born in Helsinki, the capital of Finland, to Eeli and Hilkka Nygård. The family ran a bakery and emigrated to Canada in 1952. The family's first stop there was Deloraine in the province of Manitoba . A short time later they found a new place of residence in Winnipeg . In 1964 Nygård received a business degree from the University of North Dakota .
Shortly after starting his career as a sales manager at the women's clothing manufacturer “Jacob Fashions” in 1967, he became a 20 percent co-owner of the company through a purchase. A few years later he bought the entire company from the original owner, "Nathan Jacob", and his daughters. He renamed the company to the name "Tan Jay". 1967 was the beginning of Nygård International. In 1987 he acquired a 14,000 m² plot of land on the so-called " Lyford Cays " in the Bahamas and had it built with buildings inspired by the Mayan culture . Nygård was in the year 2009, according to Canadian Business Magazine of the 70 richest Canadians with assets of 817 million US dollars . In the same year 2009 there was a fire on the Lyford Cays site, which partially destroyed the buildings. A planned reconstruction no longer came about. The land was awarded to the State of Bahamas by the Bahamas Supreme Court in 2018.
In 2020 Nygård was charged by 10 women with a class action lawsuit of raping them while they were underage and running a sex trafficking ring with them .
Nygård was briefly married once in the 1970s and has seven children with four different women.
philanthropy
Nygård have been involved in various charity projects, including the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. He was a long-time sponsor of boxing and beach volleyball and its Olympic form in the Bahamas. He started regattas or donated directly to various projects.
