Peter Sandhofe (born October 25, 1957 in Datteln ) is a former soccer goalkeeper and coach and is now the first chairman of Schwarz-Weiß Meckinghoven.
Youth career
Peter Sandhofe was active at the Datteln suburb association Schwarz-Weiß Meckinghoven up to the B-youth. In 1973 FC Schalke 04 lured him into its youth team. It didn't take long before he became an absolute pillar of the A-youth team and the first games for the Westphalia team soon followed . Due to good performance in this he came to a total of six youth international games. The highlights of his youth career were definitely the two finals for the German A youth championship, in which he was in goal. The first final in 1974/75 was clearly lost against the underdog VfB Stuttgart, the second final against RW Essen a year later was won 5-1 with confidence.
Career
In the 1976/77 season Peter Sandhofe joined Schalke's professional squad with great advance praise, but initially gained match practice in the amateur team. For the pros, however, he was overshadowed by keepers like Enver Marić , Günther Schubert and Volkmar Groß for the first two years . He had thoughts of changing, but goalkeeper Volkmar Groß came more and more criticism and had to undergo knee surgery. So Sandhofe, then 21, got his chance and was able to use it promptly against Eintracht Frankfurt . He surpassed this performance on the next matchday against FC Bayern Munich . However, he did not manage to continue the series. Even if Schalke's president Günter Siebert assured that the rumors of change of national goalkeeper Norbert Nigbur should not be believed, it was precisely this one who switched to the squires. So Sandhofe moved back to the bench and was only used a few times, but even made it into the kicker team of the day. He followed the relegation of Schalke to the 2nd Bundesliga due to a broken hand from his sickbed and remained loyal to the club in League 2. After the promotion, regular goalkeeper Nigbur fell out of favor on the eleventh game day, but the club did not trust Sandhofe, but signed Walter Junghans, who had been sorted out at Bayern Munich . After relegation in the following season, Sandhofe moved for one season to the then top division TuS Schloß Neuhaus and then played for five years at 1. FC Recklinghausen . Then he moved back to his home club Meckinghoven, where he worked as a coach for many years.
