Peter Scharf (engineer)

Peter Scharf (born September 29, 1942 in Wesermünde ) is a German mechanical engineer.

Career

Scharf studied mechanical engineering at the University of Hanover from 1962 to 1968 . He then initially worked as a development engineer for hydraulic drives and controls at Robert Bosch GmbH in Stuttgart. In 1969 he moved to the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation (IPA) in Stuttgart as a research assistant and in 1971 to the Institute for Industrial Manufacturing and Factory Management. Later he was project manager in the Collaborative Research Center Flexible Manufacturing Systems at the University of Stuttgart .

After his doctorate as Dr.-Ing. at the University of Stuttgart in 1975 he took on various management positions in the production area of ​​the German aviation industry (Airbus program). In 1985 he accepted the chair for production engineering and production automation at the University of Siegen . There he was dean of the mechanical engineering department in the academic year 1994/95; from 1997 to 2004 he was a member of the Senate of the University of Siegen. In 2007 he retired.

In 1988 he was a founding member of the Center for Sensor Systems (ZESS) at the University of Siegen and until 2009 head of the application of sensors in production technology project area , as well as head of the production technology working group in the Siegen district association of the German Engineers Association (VDI).

As chairman of the Siegen district association of the Association of German Engineers (VDI) from 2000 to 2007, he initiated the “VDI Student Prize”, a competition that has been awarding technology-oriented specialist work since 2003. The organization of the Mathematics Olympiad in schools in the Siegen region goes back to his initiative.

Honors

On November 9, 2010, he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for his “exemplary commitment to the connection between science and the region” .
