Peter Schmidt (art historian)

Peter Schmidt (born May 12, 1964 ) is a German art historian .

life and work

After studying art history , German Medieval Philology and Modern German Literature Studies in Bamberg and Berlin, Schmidt held an assistant position in 1990 at the Chair of Medieval German Philology at the University of Bamberg . His doctorate in art history at the Technical University of Berlin took place in 1995. Then Schmidt was a research assistant until 1997 on an interdisciplinary research project on late medieval panel painting at the Technical University of Berlin .

From 1998 to 2005 he worked as a research assistant at the Art History Institute at the University of Frankfurt am Main , where he completed his habilitation in 2008. After a visiting professorship at the Humboldt University in Berlin (2008 to 2009), he conducted research at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences in Munich from 2009 to 2014 (long-term project catalog of German-language illustrated manuscripts of the Middle Ages; managing director of the Commission for German Medieval Literature).

Schmidt was Professor of Art History with a focus on the Middle Ages at the University of Heidelberg from 2014 to 2017 and has been Professor of Art History of the Middle Ages at the University of Hamburg since April 2017 .
