Peter John Mitchell Thomas, Baron Thomas of Gwydir (born July 31, 1920 in Llanrwst , † February 4, 2008 ) was a British politician of the Conservative Party .

Career

Thomas received his education at Epworth College in Rhyl and Jesus College in Oxford . He then served in the British Air Force RAF in World War II , where he was a prisoner of war in Germany from 1941 to 1945. After the war he worked as a lawyer.

In 1951 he was elected to the British House of Commons as a member of the Conway constituency. From 1959 to 1961 he was State Secretary in the Ministry of Labor. 1963 to 1964 he was Secretary of State in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office . He lost his seat in parliament in 1966, but returned to parliament in 1970 for the Hendon South constituency. He remained a member of parliament until 1987. He was chairman of the Conservative Party from 1970 to 1972 and from 1970 to 1997 Minister for Wales .

In 1987, Thomas was raised to the nobility as Baron Thomas of Gwydir , of Llanrwst in the County of Gwynedd, with which a seat in the House of Lords was connected.
