Live and act

Based on his surname, it is believed that Peter de Castella was Italian, but there is no evidence for this. The date of birth and death are also not documented.

De Castella worked as a master builder for Duke Hans the Younger of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg . The most important document for this is a contract dated March 24, 1599 between the two people and the council of the city of Sønderborg. The content of the contract was the expansion of the Marienkirche in Sonderborg, which the master bricklayer was supposed to expand. For this he was to receive 1,320 marks from Luebisch and a leather dress.

At the time of the conclusion of the contract, de Castella's work on the Marienkirche, which can be regarded as his main work, was already well advanced. The time at which the contract was concluded therefore seems surprising. De Castella drew up the construction plans and carried out their own execution. He created a large choir gable in the Renaissance style, which no longer exists in this form today. As an entry in the church account book suggests, the builder had financial problems. For this reason he suddenly left the construction site in 1600. A master Jacob completed his work on October 15, 1600.

Another work by de Castella from 1582 to 1587 included the construction of the Glücksburg Castle under the direction of Nikolaus Karies . Here he probably designed the vaults. He also helped to rebuild the Laurentiuskirche in Munkbrarup, which was destroyed by a lightning strike in 1565 .

During his time in Sønderborg de Castella led repair work on several churches in Alsen in 1589 . This included a church in Oksbøl in 1593 . Presumably he also took over the western extension of the church in Dybbøl Sogn . The reason for this assumption are the round arched gables there with pilaster strips , which can also be found in Sønderborg.

In addition to working on churches, de Castella worked as a master builder on Sønderborg Castle and Brundlund Castle .
