Peter von Dörenbach

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Peter von Dörenbach († February 11, 1524 ) was abbot of the Grafschaft monastery from 1489 to 1507 .

Life

He came from a ministerial family . During his time as abbot, the secularisation of abbot and convent reached a climax. The members, all of whom came from the aristocracy, were largely uneducated, ran into debt and, although still considered themselves members of a convent, were only prepared to follow the rules that were convenient for them. In order to finance the standard of living, Peter von Dörenbach had to sell a tithe from one of the monastery properties to the city of Schmallenberg in 1495 . Against the background of these conditions, Archbishop Hermann IV pushed for a reform of the monastery. The provincial chapter of the Benedictine order commissioned the abbots of Deutz and Brauweiler with the implementation in 1507. The previous abbot and most of the convent members were dismissed for a pension and replaced by a new convent under Albert of Cologne . The previous abbot was given the Zehnthof in Schmallenberg as his residence. After the archbishop's death, Peter von Dörenbach and his followers invaded the monastery on October 30, 1508 and drove out the new convent. Only after military intervention by archbishop soldiers was he finally expelled.
