Albert of Cologne

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Albert of Cologne (lat. Albertus de Colonia ) († October 18, 1525 ) was abbot of the Grafschaft monastery from 1507 to 1525 . Under him the monastery joined the Bursfeld congregation .

Life

He probably came from Cologne . It is known from his life that he was initially a monk in the Brauweiler Abbey . After Archbishop Hermann IV ordered a reform of the Grafschaft monastery in 1507, the previous abbot Peter von Dörenbach and those monks who rejected a reform had to leave the monastery. They were replaced by six convent members from the Deutz and Brauweiler monasteries . Albert of Cologne was among them. They traveled via Hirschberg Castle , where the Archbishop was also staying at the time, in the direction of the county. In Hirschberg Albert was unanimously elected abbot and immediately confirmed by the archbishop.

At first the new community had to deal with the resistance of the former monks and their supporters before they could prevail. Under Albert of Cologne the monastery joined the Bursfeld Congregation in 1508. He also reformed the nunnery in Odacker in the spirit of the congregation. However, the conditions in the Grafschaft monastery continued to show significant deficiencies during visitations and Abbot Albert was threatened with dismissal in 1520/22.

Conflicts with Philipp von Grafschaft over the bailiwick and the associated goods were settled in 1514. Archbishop Philipp von Daun had appointed commissioners for this purpose .
