Jacob of Albaum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jacob von Albaum (* probably before 1500 ; † 1548 ) was abbot of the Grafschaft monastery in the Duchy of Westphalia from 1525 until his death.

From Jacob von Albaum's time as abbot, numerous documents have been preserved in the monastery archive in the holdings of the North Rhine-Westphalian State Archive in Münster . The name "von Albaum" makes the origin of the abbot from the village of Albaum in today's Kirchhundem community clear and is not to be assessed as a nobility name. In the penultimate document of the holdings from 1547, the abbot Jacobus Molitor is named, an indication that he came from the Mühlengut in Niederalbaum. The Monumenta Monasterii Grafschaftensis (memorabilia from the history of the Grafschaft monastery) according to the translation by Manfred Wolf name the year 1525 as the time of election as abbot. He appears in the monastery documents from 1526, but this does not rule out an earlier choice. According to the Monumenta, the time of death is 1549, but this contradicts the immediately following entry of Abbot Matheus Müller, who was elected in 1548. According to the documents handed down by the monastery, the election of Abbot Matheus Müller took place after the death of Jacobs von Albaum in 1548. Archbishop Adolf of Cologne confirmed the election on November 22, 1548 (document no. 318).

At the head of the Grafschaft monastery, Jacob von Albaum exerted influence on the intellectual and economic events of the Duchy of Westphalia in the first half of the 16th century. In his capacity as abbot he was the landlord of a not inconsiderable number of farms and self-owned . In particularly financially difficult times, he knew how to preserve the rights of the monastery through clever comparisons. In 1527 he concluded a contract with the city of Schmallenberg for the goods of the Gleidorf monastery. According to the tradition in the Monumenta Monasterii Grafschaftensis, the village was depopulated by a plague epidemic. The monastery property of the village was leased to citizens of the town of Schmallenberg by contract. In 1529 and 1537, Jacob von Albaum concluded contracts with the city of Warstein on tithe and their replacement. With the city of Attendorn in 1538 he ended a dispute over the fiefdom of the monastery there.
