Peter of Flanders

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Peter of Flanders († 1176 ) was a bishop of Cambrai in the 12th century.

As the younger son of Count Dietrich I of Flanders , Peter initially embarked on a spiritual career. He served as provost in Bruges and Saint-Omer before he was elected Bishop of Cambrai in 1167. After his older brother Matthew of Alsace was killed in battle against King Henry II of England in 1174 , he renounced his spiritual life. In 1175 Peter married the widow of Count Guido von Nevers , Mathilde of Burgundy, through which marriage he intended to take over the rule in Nevers as guardian of Mathilde's underage daughter Agnes . However, he died the following year.

Peter's marriage resulted in the daughter Sibylle, who later married Robert II. De Wavrin, Seneschal of Flanders.
