The Petermann monument

The Petermann monument in Gotha ( Thuringia ) is a memorial stone for the geographer August Petermann in the Gotha Castle Park .

history

Even during his lifetime August Petermann was considered an excellent, internationally highly respected cartographer . As the editor of Petermanns Mitteilungen , he regularly provided information on the course and results of expeditions to previously inaccessible areas around the world. The north polar region formed a focus of his interest.

After Petermann's suicide in 1878, the Justus-Perthes-Verlag initiated an appeal to the German geographic societies to donate a monument to the deserving cartographer. However, it took around three decades for it to be implemented. The memorial created by the Munich sculptor Max Hoene and inaugurated in 1909 stands next to the tea castle above the orangery . The August-Petermann-Weg passes directly in front of him.
