The Peters harvest mouse ( Mus setulosus ) is a rodent in the long-tailed mouse family (Muridae) found in Africa . The species can easily be confused with the African harvest mouse ( Mus minutoides ), some of which have the same range. Mus setulosus lacks the reddish shade of the fur.

features

The Peters harvest mouse is a large representative of the subgenus Nannomys (African harvest mice) with a head-trunk length of 77 to 86 mm and a tail length of 52 to 59 mm . It has ears about 11.5 mm long. The rather long and harsh fur on the top is dark brown to black in color with some light brown hairs speckled. It gets lighter towards the sides, while the underside and feet are covered in white fur. There is little gray or light brown hair on the dark ears. The tail is covered with scales that form rings, and there are also a few bristles. The white edge of the upper lip is narrower than that of the Temminck harvest mouse or the Hausa harvest mouse .

Distribution and way of life

The species has three separate populations in sub- Saharan Africa , the first from Sierra Leone to Togo , the second in Cameroon and neighboring regions, and another in Ethiopia . The Peters harvest mouse lives in the lowlands and in mountains up to 2,300 meters above sea level. It is found in grasslands, in sparse forests and in forest clearings. Presumably it has the same way of life as the Temminck harvest mouse.

status

No significant threats are known to the species. It is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN .
