Petra Deimer
Petra Deimer (born March 9, 1948 in Göttingen ) is a German marine biologist who has been actively committed to the protection of marine mammals since the mid-1970s . Due to their initiative, the archipelago around Madeira was declared a protection zone for marine mammals and the whaling off Madeira gradually stopped. She also contributed significantly to the creation of the Washington Convention on Endangered Species , which banned the trade in products of the sperm , fin and sei whale . She is chairman of the "Society for the Protection of Marine Mammals".
Deimer has published a number of publications on marine mammals and parrots . The work of Petra Deimer for the whales in the area of Madeira was processed by Nina Rauprich in the novel The gentle giants of the seas .
In 2001 she was awarded the Order of the Golden Ark by the Dutch Prince Consort Bernhard for her work .
