from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Petre Munteanu (born November 26, 1919 in Câmpina (Romania), † July 18, 1988 in Milan ) was a Romanian lyric tenor.

Munteanu studied violin and singing at the Bucharest Conservatory. In 1940 he made his debut at the Romanian State Opera in Bucharest. He then went to the Musikhochschule in Berlin to study lieder and oratorio singing and to improve his singing technique with Hermann Weißenborn .

Initially he worked as a concert singer in Italy. In 1947 he came to La Scala in Milan. Without any permanent ties, he made guest appearances at various major stages in Europe and finally at the Metropolitan in New York.

Munteanu did outstanding work in operas by Mozart, Rossini and Verdi and as a stylish interpreter of German romantic songs.
