The Petrel Peak is a 632 m high mountain in the north of South Georgia . It rises 1.5 km northwest of Grytviken on the northern flank of the Hodges Glacier, which has since disappeared .
The South Georgia Survey mapped it in its 1951-1957 survey campaign. It is named at the suggestion of a scientist from the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in the course of glaciological studies that were carried out in 1958 as part of the International Geophysical Year (1957-1958). It is named after the Petrel whaling ship belonging to the Compañía Argentina de Pesca company in Grytviken, as well as the snow petrel ( English Snow petrel , Latin Pagodroma nivea ), which breeds in the higher rocks of the mountain.
