Petroleum Development Oman

Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) is a state-owned Omani company that extracts and processes oil and natural gas. In 1996, 589,000 barrels of crude oil and 376,000 barrels of natural gas (in crude oil equivalent) were produced per day. In 2006 sales were $ 15,316 billion.

The company originated as Petroleum Development (Oman and Dhofar) Ltd. The shareholders at that time were: Royal Dutch Shell , Anglo-Persian Oil Company , Compagnie Française de Pétrole, Near East Development Company and Partex (Participations and Explorations Corporation). Between 1956 and 1960, oil was drilled in Oman, but nothing was found. With the exception of Shell and Partex, the other companies left the country and sold to Shell (95% of the shares). In 1962, oil was found and in 1967 oil was exported for the first time. In 1967 Compagnie Française des Pétroles bought 10% of the shares of Shell and the company was renamed Petroleum Development (Oman) .

In 1974 the government of Oman bought 25% of the company and shortly thereafter increased its stake to 60%. The remainder of the shares belonged to Shell (34%), Compagnie Française des Petroles (4%) and Partex (2%).

In 1980 the company was renamed Petroleum Development Oman .

In 1996 it was decided to develop a gas field in Qalhat near Sur . In 2000 liquefied natural gas could be exported for the first time .
