Petronella Apfelmus is a children's book series by the writer Sabine Städing with pictures by the illustrator Sabine Büchner . The stories are about the apple witch Petronella applesauce, who lives in an apple and experiences adventures together with two neighboring children - the twins Lea and Luis.

Six volumes in the series have been published by Boje Verlag since 2014 , supplemented by a narrow special volume for beginners and a Christmas book with recipes and handicraft instructions. The audio book versions will be read by Nana Spier . The figure of the apple witch Petronella appears in Sabine Städing's first novel Magnolia Steel - Hexendämmerung . “It is only mentioned there in a half-sentence. But she is already an apple witch who lives in the garden of an old mill and has trouble with the miller who lives there, ”said Städing in an interview. “My editor liked her name so much that she asked me if I would like to tell Petronella applesauce's story as well. And I really wanted to do it. ”In 2018, the first translations into Polish, Ukrainian, Czech and Slovak languages ​​appeared. The corresponding series of radio plays appeared from February 2019.

The apple witch Petronella apple sauce lives in the overgrown garden of a disused mill on the edge of an unspecified town. She lives with the stag beetle Lucius, an apple that hangs high up in an apple tree. The two are friends with the apple males , five small, hard-working creatures who look like thin sticks with arms and legs and take care of the fruit trees in the garden. When the Kuchenbrand family of four moves into the old miller's house, Petronella initially feels disturbed, but quickly becomes friends with the twins Lea and Luis. When the children climb up Petronella's apple tree with the help of a rope ladder, they shrink to the size of a thumb . The friends experience adventures together and join forces again and again against the ruthless large-scale baker Kümmerling, who tries to torpedo the cake brandy parents' plan to run a café in the old mill.

Petronella applesauce is a generous apple witch with magical abilities, a keen love of nature and a strong sense of justice. When she leaves her apple and descends to earth with the help of a rope ladder, she automatically grows to normal witch size.

Lucius

The stag beetle Lucius is Petronella's best friend and roommate in her apple apartment. At the same time, it serves the apple witch as a flying mount.

The apple men, cucumber hat, asparagus tooth, beet stream, carrot doublet and bean neck are helpful creatures, whose bodies each resemble a small stick with limbs. They wear work trousers and wool sweaters and are horticultural and botanical experts. They even have miraculous healing powers to protect the trees in the orchard. The dwelling of the male apple is hidden behind a tree root.

Lea and Luis cake brandy

The twins Lea and Luis move with their parents into the old miller's house in the immediate vicinity of Petronella's apple tree. As children eager to explore, they quickly discover the secrets of the garden and become reliable friends of Petronella, Lucius and the apple men.

Paul and Maike Kuchenbrand

The parents of the twins Lea and Luis open the Café Zur Zaubermühle in their new domicile outside the city . The father, a trained baker, is characterized by a penchant for nonsense, while the mother has experience in the catering sector and is more practical.

Petronellas sisters

Petronella's sisters Merlina, Belinda and Wilma are weather witches who can conjure up sun, rain, snow, storms or thunderstorms on request.

Mr. Kümmerling

Master baker Kümmerling, the former boss of Paul Kuchenbrand, is the opponent of Petronella, Luis and Lea. He aims to achieve the city-wide baked goods monopoly.
