Petros (pelican)

One of the three pelicans

Petros was a great white pelican who was the mascot of the Greek island of Mykonos from 1958 to 1986 .

In 1958, a Mykonos fisherman found an injured pelican. He nursed him back to health and the pelican stayed in Mykonos ( Chora ). After a while, he became the island's mascot and was called Petros. He became a local celebrity and a popular postcard motif .

After Petros' death in 1986, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis donated a new pelican named Irini to the island. Another pelican was a gift from the Hagenbeck Zoo in Hamburg , which in turn was called Petros. Finally, a third pelican was added, which in turn washed ashore injured and was called Nikolas, so that at times three pelicans lived in Mykonos.

In 2003, the honorary citizen of Mykonos and then Lord Mayor of Munich, Christian Ude , brought the pelican Chris from the Hellabrunn Zoo , which he had triggered with a donation, to Mykonos.
