Petros S. Kokkalis , Greek Πέτρος Σ. Κόκκαλης (born February 26, 1970 in Athens ) is a Greek politician ( SYRIZA ) and businessman in the Greek sports business. Since the European elections in 2019 he has been a member of the European Parliament as part of the GUE / NGL group .

Life

Origin and education

Petros S. Kokallis was born on February 26, 1970 in Athens as the son of the multimillionaire and oligarch Sokratis Kokkalis and Elena Farmakis. He is the grandson of the doctor Petros Kokkalis , communist rebel and later personal doctor of Walter Ulbricht . After completing school, Petros S. Kokkalis studied history at Hampshire College , where he completed a Master of Public Administration at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University .

Professional career

In 1994 Kokkalis started to work as Marketing Director for Olympiakos , from 1996 he managed the entire sports business as Managing Director. He was later promoted to the club's vice-president, but resigned in 2008. He was also the managing director of Thylos SA from 2000 to 2001. He was also vice-chairman of Intracom Holdings, a large multinational tech group.

In 2006 Kokkalis was elected the first chairman of the Greek Super League . He is also vice chairman of the family's Kokkalis Foundation and chairman of the Athens Information Technology research center and general secretary of Organization Earth. He was a member of the UEFA Advisory Board.

Political career

From 2014 to 2019, Kokkalis was a member of the Piraeus City Council. Originally with the request to inherit his business friend Yannis Moralis as mayor of Piraeus, he announced his resignation in March 2019 in order to run for SYRIZA in the 2019 European elections in sixth place on the list. His party won 23.7 percent in the elections, 6 of the 21 Greek seats. Kokkalis just won a mandate and joined the Confederal Group of the European United Left / Nordic Green Left together with his party colleagues . For the group, Kokkalis is a member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety and an alternate member of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development .
