The Peugeot HL 50 was the first series -produced diesel engine for passenger cars by Peugeot . It was built from 1936 to the 1940s and was initially only allowed to be installed in motor boats and agricultural equipment. From 1939 the previous ban on installation in passenger cars was lifted.

design type

The HL 50 was a water-cooled four cylinder in-line diesel engine with swirl chamber injection by Ricardo and 2.3 liters. It was designed as a long-stroke engine and developed 55 hp at 3250 rpm. The crankshaft made of chrome nickel steel had five bearings and screwed counterweights. The engine block and cylinder head were made of gray cast iron. The overhead camshaft was driven with a duplex chain and operated the hanging valves via tappets , short push rods and rocker arms . The pistons were provided with four compression rings and an oil control ring. The spherical combustion chambers and the glow plugs were screwed into the cylinder head for easy maintenance and gave the engine a smooth run. The water pump was bolted to the front of the cylinder head and was driven directly from the crankshaft with a V-belt. The intake and exhaust sides were on the right in the direction of travel. The compression was specified with 17: 1 and the idling speed with 300 / min. The fuel was delivered with a diaphragm pump. The fuel was injected by a Bosch injection pump in block design, which was mounted on the left side of the engine block. She had vacuum control. The engine is said to have consumed 33% less fuel than an equally powerful Otto engine.

This engine was presented in a Peugeot MK-4 transporter at the Paris Motor Show in 1936 and was installed in around 1000 Peugeot 402s from 1939 .
