A spatula , also pan knife , slot turner , baking shovel , spatula , Bratschaufel, Participating device or kitchen friend called, is a kitchen appliance for turning food into the pan . Kitchen spatulas usually consist of a flat plate pierced by slots or holes with a straight front edge and a longer, more or less angled handle on the rear edge. The openings in the plate are designed to prevent hot fat from splashing when it is turned over. The straight front edge enables the bottom of the pan to be scraped off, for example to loosen roasting deposits .

Kitchen spatulas are often made of sheet steel and are made from a single piece of high quality. Simpler models often have a welded handle or are formed from aluminum using die- cast aluminum . Kitchen spatulas made of wood or heat-resistant plastic are particularly suitable for non-stick pans , the coating of which can be damaged by metal tools.
