That rectory of Papa Westray is a former parsonage on the Scottish Orkney island of Papa Westray . It served as a residential building for the pastor of St Anne's Kirk . In 2001 the building was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in Category B. In addition, together with St Anne's Kirk, which is not separately listed, it forms a category B monument ensemble.

history

In the so-called "disruption" in 1843, the Free Church split from the Church of Scotland . St Anne's Kirk appears to have been the first church that a landlord gave to the newly founded Free Church. Like the church, the rectory was built in 1843. It is probably the first rectory on Papa Westray, as the island was previously cared for from the neighboring island of Westray . After the merger with the Church of Scotland in 1929, no separate clergyman was appointed for St Anne's Kirk and the rectory was henceforth used as a residential building.

The symmetrically constructed rectory is located in the center of the island on the east-west running road around 300 m east of Holland House . It consists of a two-story main building and two parallel, single-story wings, so that a U-shaped floor plan is created. The facades are plastered with Harl and the building openings are partially offset. The entrance is on the east side. The central entrance door is equipped with a skylight and is surrounded on all sides by windows on three vertical axes. At the back, the two wings go off in a westerly direction and frame a round arched window. The right wing is slightly longer than the left, which is due to an extension. A short wing with a stepped gable goes south from this extension . The main building ends with a slate hipped roof , while gable roofs can be found on the wings . The interior has largely been preserved in its original state. A quarry stone wall encloses the adjacent garden in the southeast.
