history
On the site of a barrack camp of the German Wehrmacht , which was used as emergency shelter for the homeless and refugees after the Second World War, houses and settlements were built and the new district of Eichat was created, where more than half of the Absamer population lives today. As early as 1957, thanks to the efforts of the then pastor of Absam, Karl Woditschka, an emergency church was set up in a former workshop . This was done in the same year on March 19, the feast day of St. Joseph, consecrated.
On November 25, 1968, the actual church building in Eichat could begin. On May 1, 1969, the day of remembrance of Joseph the Worker, the foundation stone was laid by Vicar General Josef Hammerl. In the plans of Rudolf Siegert and Herbert Hanak , a parish hall, a parish hall and a tower were provided in addition to the church. However, the tower was never built. A few weeks before the church was consecrated, when the pews were already installed, a large part of the ceiling collapsed, which caused enormous damage.
The Church of St. Joseph was consecrated on October 8, 1972 by Bishop Paulus Rusch . On the same day he presented Balthasar Schmerl with the installation certificate for the pastor of Eichat. Thus Eichat was from the parish Absam abgepfarrt and an independent parish. Today it forms a pastoral care room together with the parishes of Absam and Thaur .
