The Roman Catholic parish church Arbesthal is slightly elevated in the south of the village Arbesthal in the municipality of Göttlesbrunn-Arbesthal in the district of Bruck an der Leitha in Lower Austria . The parish church of John the Baptist belongs to the deanery of Bruck an der Leitha in the vicariate Unter dem Wienerwald of the Archdiocese of Vienna . The church is a listed building .

history

The church was built on the site of the former mansion of the Lords of Arweiztal. In 1248 a chapel is mentioned as a branch of Bruck an der Leitha . In 1308 a pastor is mentioned in a document. The church has a Romanesque choir square, a Gothic nave and a high Gothic choir tower. The church was elevated to a parish church in 1783, but was again a subsidiary church from 1806 to 1849. In the middle of the 17th century, the choir and nave were uniformly vaulted and the tower was raised. The Baroque First Cross is marked with Elisabeta Sterwizin 1659.

architecture

The church is surrounded by a cemetery with a churchyard wall.

The Romanesque choir square, probably the former castle chapel room, consists of large-format ashlar masonry with different storage heights above a circumferential plinth from the first half of the 13th century. The current nave made of quarry stone with corner blocks on the longitudinal walls of the Romanesque nave was probably built in the 14th century. The remains of the Romanesque nave became the choir, and the Gothic tower was built over the choir square.

Furnishing

The high altar from 1713 as a slightly swinging column / pilaster reredos on a high tier with blown entablature carries the statues Peter and Paul on the side and shows the altar sheet Baptism of Christ from 1765.

Antal Schönhofer (1908) built the organ in a neo-baroque case .
