Kai von Klitzing (born November 23, 1954 in Aachen ) is a German child and adolescent psychoanalyst , psychoanalyst and university professor at the Leipzig University Hospital . He conducts research in the fields of early childhood mental health, developmental psychopathology, and childhood psychotherapy .

Life

Kai von Klitzing is the son of the manufacturer Diether von Klitzing (1907–1985) and the photographer Brigitte von Klitzing (1914–2017). From 1974 to 1980 he studied medicine at the University of Freiburg , where he received his doctorate in 1981. From 1982 to 1986 he worked as an assistant doctor at the State Hospital Weissenau, Ravensburg (Psychiatric Clinic of the University of Ulm) and at the Hospital Lörrach in the subjects of psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry and pediatrics . In 1987 he took over first a senior physician and later a senior physician position at the child and adolescent psychiatric clinic in Basel with Dieter Bürgin . He completed his psychoanalytical training for children, adolescents and adults at the Swiss Society for Psychoanalysis and completed his habilitation in 1997 on the subject of “early child development and family relationships” at the University of Basel .

From 1997 to 1998 he spent a research stay with Robert N. Emde at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver . In 2000 he was appointed associate professor at the University of Basel. In 2006 he accepted a chair for child and adolescent psychiatry and psychotherapy at the University of Leipzig and became director of the clinic for psychiatry, psychotherapy and psychosomatics of children and adolescents at the Leipzig University Clinic. From 2012 to 2018 he was the medical and scientific head of the Department of Women's and Children's Medicine . In 2020 he was appointed visiting professor at the Sapienza University of Rome .

Scientific contribution

At the beginning of his scientific activity, von Klitzing dealt with the psychological development of infants and toddlers in connection with family relationships and the parents' imagination. He put a special emphasis on research in his studies along with Dieter Bürgin father-child relationship and the early triadic constellation father-mother child.

During his time in Colorado he conducted studies with Robert N. Emde and Kim Kelsay on the narratives of kindergarten children and their connection with mental disorders. After returning to Basel, he and Sonja Perren devoted himself to researching mental disorders in kindergarten age. He continued this line at the Leipzig University Clinic, where he dealt with stress regulation and diagnostic methods in preschool children with anxiety and depression disorders. Together with Tanja Göttken, he developed and evaluated a new type of psychoanalytic short-term therapy (PaKT) for children with symptoms of anxiety and depression .

Von Klitzing has been co-editor of the journal Kinderanalyse since 2002 and president of the World Association for Infant Mental Health since 2016.

honors and awards

In 2007 von Klitzing received the August Homburg Prize from the University of Würzburg for his research on developmental psychopathology in early childhood.
