Breitensee Parish Church (Marchegg)

Catholic parish church of St. Peter and Paul in Breitensee

The Roman Catholic parish church Breitensee is located in the village Breitensee in the municipality Marchegg in the district Gänserndorf in Lower Austria . It is consecrated to Saints Peter and Paul and belongs to the Marchfeld deanery in the vicariate Unter dem Manhartsberg of the Archdiocese of Vienna . The building is a listed building .

Location description

The former pilgrimage church is raised in the east of the place and is surrounded by a cemetery.

history

The church is essentially an early Gothic building from the second half of the 13th century. A baroque renovation took place in the 17th century . In 1784 the church was elevated to a parish church.

Church exterior

The church has a simple nave with pointed arched windows. The choir is a little separated. In the core, remains of an original choir square can probably be seen. Between the nave and the choir is a squat roof turret with sound windows and a pointed helmet. In the south, a baroque sacristy extension from the 17th century adjoins the roof turret. The western porch was built in the mid-19th century.

Church interior

The nave is two-bay and cross -arched with keystones . The nave is separated from the choir by a wide, pointed triumphal arch . The choir was rebuilt during the Baroque period and is structured by girders . The choir ends on 3/8. The southern sacristy from the 17th century has a groin vault and a rosette keystone.

Furnishing

The neo-Gothic high altar dates from the third quarter of the 19th century. In two niches there are figures of St. Peter and St. Paul. The Stations of the Cross are from the 19th century, the font from the end of the 17th century.
