Parish Church Kapfenberg - Holy Family

The parish church Kapfenberg - Holy Family is a Roman Catholic parish church on Johann Nestroy Straße in the Walfersam district of the city of Kapfenberg in the Bruck-Mürzzuschlag district in Styria . It is consecrated to the Holy Family and, together with the parishes of Kapfenberg-Schirmitzbühel and Kapfenberg-St.Oswald, forms a parish association in the deanery of Bruck an der Mur .

history

After the end of the Second World War, thousands of people were expelled from Southeastern Europe, who also sought protection in Austria and settled in Kapfenberg, among other places. At that time the barrack church of St. Family founded as a branch of the parish St. Oswald. In 1951 it was raised to an independent parish. The first pastor was Johann List, and one of the first chaplains was the later Bishop of Graz-Seckau Johann Weber . In 1962 the parish church was consecrated to the Holy Family after two years of construction in the Walfersam district. For the first time in the Styrian church building, the building took up the needs of the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council .

In September 2017, a 16-year-old, who was already officially known at the time, was set on fire. During the fire, the interior of the church - especially the confessionals - was partially badly damaged. After the churches Schirmitzbühel and St. Oswald had already been renovated, it was announced in August 2019 that the Walfersamer church would also be renovated for 270,000 euros in a second construction phase. The first phase of the renovation had already started in spring 2018 after the arson the previous autumn.

Architecture and equipment

The church was built between 1960 and 1962 according to the plans of the architect Ferdinand Schuster with a free-standing bell tower. The stained glass windows are by the painter Mario Decleva .
