The parish church Kapfenberg-St. Oswald is in the town of Kapfenberg in the Bruck-Mürzzuschlag district in Styria . The Roman Catholic parish church consecrated to St. Oswald belongs to the deanery of Bruck an der Mur in the Graz-Seckau diocese . The church is a listed building ( list entry ).

History and architecture

In the 11th century, an original Romanesque predecessor building stood on the site of today's church , the foundations of which were exposed. The late Gothic sacred building was first mentioned in documents in 1330, the parish was built in 1374. In the course of the 15th century there was a Gothic extension with parts that are still recognizable today. The ribbed vault of the choir rests on consoles ; it has round keystones with a coat of arms of the Stubenberg family . The oratorio box is designed in the Rococo style.

In the middle of the 18th century, from 1752 to 1755, it was rebuilt in the Baroque style . The three-storey tower dates from 1710 and originally had a baroque hood before it was destroyed by lightning in 1834 and replaced by the current pointed helmet . The stained glass windows date from 1912 and 1953.

Interior

All the altars and statues in the interior of the church are in the Rococo style (18th century) and most likely originate from the hand of the South Tyrolean sculptor Veit Königer , who lives in Graz , especially those figures in the side altars and the “ Holy Grave ”. The altarpiece on the high altar , drawn by JV Hauckh, shows St. Oswald, the statues of St. Florian and St. Donatus are made in the style of Jakob Peyer. The organ, which is decorated with rich Rococo decorations, was built around 1770. The Gothic font has a Rococo top, the pews date from the first half of the 18th century and the depictions of the Stations of the Cross were created in 1974 by Otto Daringer.
