The Lichtenegg parish church is slightly elevated west of the main street in the center of the municipality of Lichtenegg in the Wiener Neustadt-Land district in Lower Austria . The Roman Catholic parish church consecrated to Saint James the Elder belongs to the Deanery Kirchschlag in the vicariate Unter dem Wienerwald of the Archdiocese of Vienna . The former fortified church is a listed building ( list entry ).

history

Around 1250 a parish was named. In 1282 the vicar Ulrich was mentioned in a document. In 1336 there were reports of conflicts over tithes of the church; from 1444 to 1446, Emperor Friedrich III. a ten dispute for St. George's Church in Wiener Neustadt , the ten dispute lasted until 1817. The churchyard was used as a cemetery until 1828.

The first church was built before 1282. The choir square was built in the first half of the 13th century, a Romanesque sealing mortar with a trowel has been preserved. The core of the nave was built in the first half of the 13th century. The wall painting of the choir was created around 1400. In the beginning of the 15th century the church was expanded into a fortified church, the steeple was raised, the church was given a fortified floor above the nave, and the roof was renewed and dendrochronologically dated 1405 . The choir was vaulted in the third third of the 15th century.

The roof structure was repaired in 1638. In 1953, wall paintings were uncovered and restored. 1973 was a restoration.

The massive Romanesque fortified church complex with a squat square choir tower stands in an almost square churchyard, partly with defensive walls.

Furnishing

The high altar from 1745 is a columned retable, slightly curved with a pair of columns in front of it, with a cranked cornice and sacrificial portals with large angel figures. The high altar sheet hl. Jakobus the Elder painted Josef Keßler (1881) and bears a renovation mention of 1908. The extract shows the picture St. Johannes Nepomuk with two angels. The altar is flanked by the statues Florian and Donatus and to the side of the extension the statues of John the Evangelist and Anthony of Padua. The Madonna of Mercy as a baroque copy comes from Vienna-Döbling.
