history

Since the Gothic church from the 15th century had become too small in the 19th century, calls for an enlargement were loud. Under the aegis of Bishop Franz Joseph Rudigier , a fund was set up to enlarge the church.

The reconstruction and new construction of the church took place between 1890 and 1895 according to plans by the important Upper Austrian architect Raimund Jeblinger . In 1895 the church was consecrated by Bishop Franz Maria Doppelbauer . However, the mighty tower was not completed until 1907.

Because of the size and imposingness of the tallest structure in the Mühlviertel, which is unusual for this region, the church is called "Mühlviertel Cathedral".
