The parish church Petrus und Paulus is a church in Sexten in South Tyrol. It is consecrated to the princes of the apostles Peter and Paul .

history

In Sesto there was a church dedicated to St. Nicholas with an unknown location as early as the 13th century. Since it fell victim to a fire, a new church was consecrated to St. Vitus in 1384. After two extensions in 1667 and 1767, this turned out to be too small at the beginning of the 18th century.

After a public survey, the Sesto population decided to build a new church. The citizens of Sesto provided 5059 guilders as well as larch and spruce wood. The parish church of St. Petrus and Paulus was designed and built in 1825/26 by Alois Mutschlechner (* 1797) from Tristach , the brother of the better-known Anton Mutschlechner . It was consecrated in August 1827 by the Bishop of Udine, Emanuele Lodi , and in 1900 a restoration took place under Pastor Bachlechner. In August 1915 the church fell victim to incendiary grenades. Reconstruction began in 1921, with the roof structure being completely rebuilt. After the reconstruction was completed in October 1923, a three-day consecration took place.

art

At the entrance to the cemetery there is a dance of death in the form of frescoes by the painter Rudolf Stolz . The church has sacred works of art by the Venetian painter Cosroe Dusi . In the cemetery in the upper row of arcades there is a crucifix by Ignaz Gabloner. There is a painting by Gretel Stolz and Albert Stolz in the chapel for the fallen soldiers of both world wars .
