Stolz studied from 1898 to 1903 at the Vienna Academy with Alois Delug . He was fond of depictions of everyday rural life, Tyrolean legendary figures, and also accepted orders for ecclesiastical and secular murals. During the years of the fascist and national socialist dictatorship, he took part in the "Gau art exhibitions Tirol-Vorarlberg" in Innsbruck and in the art biennials close to the regime in Bolzano. Several works are also in the context of the South Tyrolean option and revolve around the motif of losing one's home.

After the Second World War , Stolz took over the chairmanship of the South Tyrolean Artists Association founded in 1946 .
