The Scheifling parish church is located at the north-western end of the village in the market town of Scheifling in the Murau district in Styria . The patronage of St. Thomas' subordinate Roman Catholic parish church - incorporated into St. Lambrecht Monastery - belongs to the Murau deanery in the Graz-Seckau diocese . The church and the former cemetery are under monument protection ( list entry ).

history

A little before 1203 the church was built by the St. Lambrecht monastery and since then has been incorporated into the monastery.

The Romanesque church with a baroque nave was restored in 1975/1976.

architecture

The church building, which is essentially Romanesque, is still partially surrounded by the walling of the former cemetery.

The exterior of the church shows a mighty west tower with an onion dome and lantern from 1684 and a nave and a somewhat retracted somewhat lower choir under separate gable roofs. On the outside of the tower is a baroque crucifix from the 18th century. At the end of the choir are grave monuments from 1833 and 1850.

The interior of the church shows a nave under a flat barrel vault with a simple stucco field and a narrow north aisle under a flat ceiling. The renewed wooden gallery is connected to the west tower yoke. The constricted front arch has a pressed round arch. The slightly narrower, three steps higher choir square has an early Gothic cross rib vault on consoles. There are Gothic windows with panes from 1853 with colored glasses by I. Hilberth from Klagenfurt. In the choir is a shoulder-arched Gothic portal with a door with iron fittings to the northern sacristy.

Furnishing

The high altar with gallery portals shows St. Thomas in clouds, the statues were created by Balthasar Prandtstätter around 1737. The side altars around 1720/1730 bear top figures of St. Benedict and bishop from the second third of the 17th century and on the right a Pietà from the beginning of the 15th century from the right altar in St. Lambrecht transferred here.

Gothic reliefs Fourteen emergency helpers around 1490 were stolen in 1971, six of them were recovered in 1980.
