The parish church of St. Michael is a church in Innichen , South Tyrol.

history

The church was built in the 12th century using the walls of an old building. After a fire in 1735 the church was restored and embellished, the tower was raised by an octagonal floor and received an onion dome. The church also got a new facade and a new roof and finally, in 1740, the first small attempt at baroqueization was started. In 1753 various Baroque modifications were carried out under the pastor at the time, Canon Dominikus Schraffl, and the church was radically redesigned. Due to the breakout of large pairs of windows, the load-bearing capacity of the walls had to be reinforced with four wall pilasters inside the church, and in 1760 the baroque style was completed.

art

In the interior of the church there are flat domes with frescoes by Christoph Anton Mayr . On the vault fresco above the altar you can see St. Michael and the fallen angels in hell and on the three vault frescos of the church nave St. Michael is depicted as the conqueror of the evil forces, the patron of the church and the patron saint of the dying. There are also decorative paintings by the same artist on the walls of the church. The pointed arch portal on the south side consists of older components from the Romanesque and Gothic styles and was designed in the third quarter of the 18th century.
