history

The planning for a new church between the inner city and Viehofen began in the interwar period, when the incorporation of Spratzern, Viehofen and Wagram and the population growth made it necessary to found a new parish. The property was purchased in 1938, and a church building association was founded in 1953. When the plans became more concrete in 1958, the apparitions of Mary in Lourdes were celebrating the hundredth anniversary , which is why the church was later consecrated to Maria Lourdes. After an architectural competition won by Franz Barnath , the foundation stone was laid in 1959 and the church was consecrated in 1961. In 1969 the church received a 3.70 m tall statue of the Virgin Mary by the South Tyrolean sculptor Johann Rifesser, which has since stood in the middle of the apse.

The organ was built in 1981 by the Upper Austrian Organ Builders.
