The Roman Catholic parish church Unterwaltersdorf is located in Unterwaltersdorf in the town of Ebreichsdorf in Lower Austria . The parish church of St. Bartholomäus belongs to the deanery Weigelsdorf in the vicariate Unter dem Wienerwald in the archdiocese of Vienna . The church and the fortified cemetery are under monument protection.

history

The parish was founded in the middle of the 11th century, from around 1160 it was an own parish of the Babenbergs. In 1252 the parish church was destroyed by the Hungarians.

architecture

The church is in the middle of a fortified former military cemetery, a little to the south is the Barbara chapel, a former charnel house. Parts of the former curtain wall and the moat are still there. After previous Romanesque buildings, the church was expanded into a fortification in the 14th century. The building was expanded in several stages. A sacristy and a Gothic part were built on the south side. In the 16th century a portal porch was added to the north. A Mount of Olives Chapel was built in 1688, and the nave was vaulted after 1769. In 1822 a staircase to the music choir and in 1831 a tower was added on the west side. This is three-zone with an onion cap.

Furnishing and equipment

Wall paintings from the second half of the 14th century (St. Christopher ) are preserved in the attic . The furnishings are predominantly neo-baroque from the 19th century. The high altar painting from the 18th century by Hans Chytra shows St. Bartholomäus, the niche altars have statues, on the left Maria Immaculate and on the right the Sacred Heart .

Some gravestones and slabs have been preserved outside and inside.

The small building was originally the Karner . The remarkable Romanesque-Early Gothic undivided rectangular building from the late 13th century is located south of the parish church and has a hipped roof. A 5/8 polygon is built on the east side, the portal was moved to the west side in the 17th century, and the staircase was renewed in 1949.
